Inspired by a heart-wrenching story shared by a Linkedin user about children living on the streets in Abeokuta, Gloves for Africa, founded by Chuks Uwaechia, took decisive action to make a difference.

Upon arriving, we were confronted with a grim reality—children sleeping beside waste bins, scavenging for items in garbage heaps, and, heartbreakingly, some being exploited to sell or use hard drugs. One of the children guided us to their gathering spot, where we witnessed the harsh conditions, they endure daily.

Moved by compassion, we took immediate steps to help. We rescued five children from the streets, offering them a glimpse of a better life. They received new clothes, shoes, haircuts, and a hearty meal, but we knew this was just the beginning of their transformation.

We ensured they wouldn’t return to homelessness by arranging temporary shelter with our team member, Yinka Adeoti, a national boxing coach, while working on securing a permanent home. Their dreams ranged from returning to school to acquiring skills for a brighter future.

To inspire them, we revisited the garbage site with a World Boxing Council (WBC) symbol—a powerful reminder of what they could achieve. We encouraged them to envision a future where they could return, not as scavengers, but as champions and role models.

One poignant moment was reuniting 12-year-old Kudus, who had been living on the streets for over a year, with his mother. Her tears spoke volumes about the pain of separation and the hope for a new beginning
